Dr. Mukherjee completed her Master’s and Doctoral degrees at the Wildlife Institute of India and Saurashtra University, with doctoral work on habitat use by sympatric small carnivores in Sariska Tiger Reserve. She later worked with the Policy Research Cell at the Wildlife Institute of India, the Wildlife Trust of India, and Tiger Watch, Ranthambhore, before conducting postdoctoral research on the phylogeography of jungle cat and leopard cat at the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bengaluru (2005–2009).

She joined SACON in 2010 within the Division of Conservation Biology. Her current work centres on a Conservation Action Plan for the Endangered Forest Owlet, alongside continued research on the evolutionary and ecological dimensions of small wild cats across India.
